Coffee to Water Ratio Calculator

Enter any two of coffee weight, water weight and brew ratio, and the third value is calculated instantly. Presets are editable starting points; this tool does not estimate beverage mass in the cup.

Tool

How It Works

Brew ratio expresses how much water is used for each gram of dry coffee. The calculator uses the identity water = coffee × ratio, rearranged depending on which value you asked it to solve. Water mass is close enough to its volume for ordinary kitchen planning, but the result is still a mass recipe, not a cup-size prediction.

The calculation deliberately stops at the input ratio. Retained water, beverage mass and perceived strength vary with the coffee, brewer, filter and workflow, so this page does not assign a universal retention rate or a flavour label to a ratio. Record the resulting beverage mass if you need it for a later brew.

Step-by-Step Usage Guide

  1. Choose which value you want the calculator to solve for.
  2. Type the two known values; fields update without a submit button.
  3. Use a preset only as a convenient number to edit, not as a quality target.
  4. Weigh coffee and water on a scale rather than relying on volume scoops.
  5. Record the recipe and what you tasted so the next brew has a meaningful comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The ratio always refers to the total water that touches the coffee, including the bloom. If you pour 40 g for the bloom and 260 g afterwards, your total is 300 g.
Brewers and grounds retain some water, but the amount varies with dose, grind, method and draining time. This calculator only covers the input ratio. Weigh the finished beverage if you need an observed yield, or use the Brew Yield Calculator with a retention value you measured.
No. Espresso is normally expressed as a brew ratio between 1:1.5 and 1:3, so use the Espresso Parameter Calculator instead of filter ratios.
It can be useful to try a different starting ratio, but neither roast appearance nor one fixed ratio determines taste. Change one measured variable after tasting and keep notes so that the comparison remains useful.

Applicable Scenarios

This is the first tool to reach for when you switch beans, change brewer size or scale a recipe up for guests. It suits complete beginners who want a reliable starting point, and it suits experienced brewers who need to convert a published recipe to the dose their brewer actually holds. Cafés running a small home-style setup can also use it to standardise batches so every barista pours the same strength.
