Brewing calculation

Brew Yield Calculator

Use a retention value you have measured or decided to test to calculate the beverage mass remaining from a water dose.

Measured or chosen values

What it calculates

Expected beverage mass equals brew-water mass minus the retention mass you enter. The coffee dose is retained as a recipe record, not used to invent a retention rate.

Limit

Water retention changes across coffee, brewer and workflow. Weigh an actual brewed beverage if you need an observed result, then use that observation in the next calculation.

How to use it

  1. Weigh the water used in the recipe.
  2. Enter the coffee dose so the result remains attached to a specific recipe.
  3. Enter a retained-water value that you measured, or one you are deliberately testing.
  4. Compare the calculated beverage mass with a scale reading after brewing and revise the retained value if needed.

When this helps

Use this tool when you want to record the mass that reached the server, compare a recipe with a target beverage amount, or make a measured water-retention assumption visible in your notes. It is not an extraction calculation and it does not predict flavour.

Frequently asked questions

No. The retained-water field is an input. The calculator keeps the dose as recipe context and subtracts only the retention value you enter.
You can use a prior measurement as a starting point, but brewer geometry, dose, grind and drain time can change the observed result. Check it against a scale when the value matters.
Some water may remain in the brewer or grounds, and small scale or transfer differences also matter. This is a transparent subtraction, not a guarantee of the cup mass.
No. Extraction yield requires additional measurements such as beverage strength and a defined method. Use the Extraction Yield Calculator when you have the needed inputs.
